Being Smart to Better Deal with Plastics

Plastics bring convenience and various benefits to our lives through use in place of traditional natural materials for a wide variety of products that take advantage of their properties. Light, strong and easy to both color and mass-produce, even in complex shapes -- plastics are utilized for many kinds of stationery, such as files, correction tapes, and erasers.
Meanwhile, some plastics end up as litter or are disposed of illegally. Because they have not been properly treated, they leak into oceans, causing the marine pollution that affects whole ecosystems which has become an emerging global issue.
In order to resolve this situation, the government is promoting plastic resource circulation in an integrated way, for example, thorough control of single-use plastic production, adoption of effective, efficient and sustainable recycling as well as utilization of recycled materials and bio-plastics.
The PLUS Group supports these measures taken by the government and putting our efforts in accelerating 3R (reuse, reduce and recycle) + Renewable and proper treatment for plastics.
These efforts contribute to SDGs Goal 11 "Sustainable Cities and Communications", Goal 12 "Responsible Consumptions and Production", and Goal 14 "Life Below Water".

Implementation of the Campaign for Reducing Single-Use Plastic Waste

The PLUS Group recognizes that the issue of marine plastic waste is one of the most important global environmental issues, and as something we can do to help solve it, we have been conducting the Campaign for Reducing Single-Use Plastic Waste since 2019, with the aim of reducing the amount of single-use plastic waste generated in office life.
This campaign, led by the CSR Office and the "PLUS no kokoro Ambassadorship Project", aims to deepen employees' understanding of the issue of marine plastic waste and encourage them to think and act on its reduction.

  • ※ This project consists of employees appointed by each Group company, and aims to spread the corporate philosophy.

Distribution of original eco-bags

In 2020, we made efforts to reduce disposable plastic bag waste as a reduction activity that we can do in our office life.
We distributed Plus Group's original eco-bags to all Group companies and employees in Japan, and started an activity to declare "No plastic bags needed" when shopping for lunch.

The Ministry of the Environment's "Plastic Shopping Bag Reduction Challenge

Our distribution of reusable shopping bags to all employees of our Group companies in Japan was published in the "Plastic Shopping Bag Reduction Challenge," organized by the Ministry of the Environment.

Reduced Plastic Bag Waste by 43% by Promoting the Use of Reusable Bags

At the PLUS Toranomon Headquarters, we have been measuring plastic bag waste for four days every month since August 2020, when reusable shopping bags were first distributed. At the same time, we have been conducting activities to promote the use of reusable bags, including putting up posters in the office to promote their use and covering how employees of our Group companies across the country use reusable shopping bags in the Group online newsletter.
As a result, we were able to reduce the number of plastic bags thrown away per day from 141 in August (when we distributed reusable shopping bags) to 80 in December, a reduction of about 43%.
